HSC 2027

Starting Year 12: a Term 4 plan for HSC 2027 students

Starting Year 12 happens sooner than most families expect. In NSW, HSC courses begin in Term 4 of what feels like Year 11, so the class of 2027 started Year 12 this term. For English students it's also the first cohort under NESA's new English 11–12 syllabuses. This guide is a practical plan for the first ten weeks: what to set up, what to watch out for, and a weekly routine that holds up once assessments start.

1. Get the assessment schedule and read it properly

Every school publishes a Year 12 assessment schedule. In week one, put every task, its weighting and its due date into one calendar, not seven separate ones. Then look for the clusters, the weeks where two or three tasks land together. Those weeks are planned for now, not discovered the week before.

The school-based assessment counts. A student's HSC mark in each course combines their moderated school assessment mark with their HSC exam mark. Steady work across the year matters as much as the exams.

2. Know what's new in English

NESA's new English 11–12 syllabuses (2024) started for Year 12 in Term 4, 2026, and the first HSC exam under them is in 2027. NESA has also released a prescriptions list for 2027–2028. In practice:

  • Read your school's English assessment notifications closely. They're the clearest guide to what the new course expects.
  • Past HSC papers are still useful for skills, such as timed essays and close reading. Check each question against the new syllabus before using it as exam practice.
  • Start the prescribed texts early. The first reading should be done before the first task, not during it.

3. Check where you stand on the HSC minimum standard

To receive the HSC, NSW students must show the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. Most do this through online tests in reading, writing and numeracy, which can be attempted from Year 10. If you haven't met it yet, ask your school when your next attempt is and plan for it in Term 4. Don't leave it until later in the year.

4. A weekly routine that survives assessment season

BlockSuggestion
School nights2–3 focused study blocks of about 45 minutes, phone out of the room
Each subject, weeklyOne "consolidate" session: summarise the week's content in your own words
Each subject, fortnightlyOne timed practice question, marked against the criteria
WeekendOne longer block for upcoming assessments, plus genuine time off
SleepProtect it. Late-night cramming costs more than it gains

Adjust the numbers to your subjects and commitments. The routine matters more than the hours, and a plan you'll actually follow beats an ambitious one you drop by week three.

5. Get feedback early, not just marks

The students who improve most in Year 12 act on feedback quickly. Before each task, get a draft or practice response looked at. After each task, write down the two or three things the marker wanted that you didn't give them, and carry those into the next task.

6. Look after the person doing the HSC

Year 12 is a long year. Regular exercise, sleep, and time with friends and family aren't distractions from study. They're what makes the study sustainable. If stress is getting in the way, talk to your school's year adviser or counsellor early.

Frequently asked questions

When does Year 12 start in NSW?

HSC courses start in Term 4. Students begin Year 12 work in the last term of the calendar year before their HSC exams.

Is the 2027 HSC English course different?

Yes. HSC 2027 is the first exam under NESA's English 11–12 syllabuses (2024), which Year 12 began studying in Term 4, 2026.

How many hours should a Year 12 student study?

There's no single right number. A sustainable routine of a few focused blocks on school nights, plus a longer weekend session, works better than long, unfocused hours.

When should Year 12 students start tutoring?

If you know a subject is a weak spot, Term 4 is the best time, before the first assessments. Tutoring can start at any point, though.
