OC tutoring for the Opportunity Class Placement Test
Excel Tutoring Academy offers OC tutoring for Sydney families in the Wentworthville area and across Western Sydney. It's opportunity class tutoring for Year 4 students getting ready for the NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test, as part of our Selective & OC preparation for Years 4 to 6. Sessions are one-on-one or in a small group, online or at your home. We build the three skills the test measures: reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Preparation is built around the real test format, with practice in exam timing and technique. Call 0433 856 817 to talk about where your child is now.
What the OC test looks like
The Opportunity Class Placement Test is a computer-based, multiple-choice test that students sit in Year 4 for entry to an opportunity class in Year 5. It has three equally weighted sections:
| Section | Questions | Time | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 14 (some with multiple parts) | 40 minutes | 33.3% |
| Mathematical Reasoning | 35 | 40 minutes | 33.3% |
| Thinking Skills | 30 | 30 minutes | 33.3% |
There's no writing section in the OC test, unlike the Selective test. Calculators aren't allowed, but students can do working out on paper. The NSW Department of Education says the questions draw on curriculum concepts up to Year 4, so your child doesn't need extra content. What the test rewards is applying what they already know, quickly and accurately.

How we prepare students
- 1
Start with a diagnostic.
We pinpoint exactly where your child is at across the three areas and map out a plan. For some children the gap is reading stamina on long on-screen texts. For others it's the multi-step maths questions, or unfamiliar thinking-skills question types.
- 2
Reading on screen, against the clock.
The reading section mixes fiction, non-fiction, poetry and reports. We practise reading carefully on a screen, finding evidence in the text and eliminating distractor answers. Students do this in 40-minute blocks so the pace becomes familiar.
- 3
Mathematical reasoning, not new maths.
We don't race ahead through the curriculum. We work on applying the maths your child already knows to unfamiliar problems: reading the question properly, choosing a strategy and checking the answer against the options.
- 4
Thinking skills, by question type.
The thinking skills section has recognisable question types, such as critical thinking, problem solving and spatial reasoning. We teach a method for each type and then mix them up so students learn to switch between them.
- 5
Exam timing and technique.
Before the test, students practise full timed sections and review their mistakes with their tutor.
A realistic timeline
| When | Focus |
|---|---|
| November to February (end of Year 3 into Year 4) | Applications open and close (NSW Department of Education) |
| Year 4, Term 1 | Diagnostic, then skill-building in all three areas, including thinking skills methods and timed section practice |
| Year 4, Term 2 (before the test in early May) | Full timed practice on screen, error review, test-day routine |
Check the NSW Department of Education key dates for your child's entry year. Application windows and test dates are confirmed each year.
Honest expectations
OC places are allocated on test performance, and no tutor can promise a place. What preparation can do is make sure your child understands the test format, isn't thrown by the question types, and has practised working at test pace. Then their result reflects what they can actually do.
OC preparation questions
What year does my child sit the OC test?
- Year 4, for entry to an opportunity class in Year 5. Applications run from November to February, and the test is in early May.
Does the OC test include writing?
- No. The OC test has three sections: reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Writing is part of the Selective High School Placement Test only.
Is OC tutoring online or face-to-face?
- Both. Sessions run online, or a tutor comes to your home in the Wentworthville area and across Western Sydney.
When should we start?
- The test is in early May of Year 4, so starting early in Year 4 leaves the most time to build skills. Starting later can still help with format familiarity.
Is OC preparation the same as Selective preparation?
- The skills overlap, but the tests differ. The OC test has no writing section and fewer, shorter sections. See our OC vs Selective guide and Selective school tutoring.
